STEREOTYPES of your TRIBE

These are all the lists I received, minus those from ITAM students (for the reason that I will publish them after I receive the new lists of stereotypes targeting ITAMs).

COMMENT: are there items that you are not familiar with? Add, with the appropriate tone, other stereotypes you are familiar with, either about your or someone else's tribe.  For instance, abt Mexicans (not necessarily in NY, but in the rest of the country two of the biggest are "pick up trucks" and "tequila." At the same time.)

  1. I have read through the stereotypes of the LGBT community, and being a part of the community myself, there are some things that I personally have not dealt with. I wasn't seen as "weak" or "confused," in this day and age, especially in New York, I find that if someone is being stereotypical about me being part of the LGBT community, it is usually overly-positive comments. But I do understand that each person has their own unique experiences. But I do agree with the majority of that list. Other than that, I also belong to the Arab "tribe," and if I had to put the combination of both Arab and LGBT, 100% all of the things that come to me are negative.

  2. I do not feel comfortable adding any stereotypes other than some for Italian americans but the stereotypes for that "tribe" have not been added yet. I feel this way because we will not be diving into the origins of these stereotypes the way we will be with Italian american ones.

  3. From what I've read it's all pretty accurate of what you hear from around the world of different races.

    1. Many of the stereotypes are accurate, especially the people from the island such as the caribbean do have a heavy broken accent. And if you travel around the world you will notice many of these stereotypes are 100% true.

  4. For Mexicans as I am one, I forgot to mention some of the positive stereotypes. We are very family oriented, we are very patriotic, we love our traditions and holidays and try to show them to everyone we know. Not all stereotypes can be bad but I personally have been put into those stereotypes more than once even if I'm nothing like people say we are.

  5. As an African American, it is often heard that we as a people are disadvantaged. We are born with certain privileges taken from us and I honestly can't say if that's true or not. Maybe sometimes I feel that way, but then I look at my peers who were born into a similar situation, maybe even worse, and are successful in life. Success meaning happy and fulfilled.

  6. All of these stereotypes are pertaining to a specific tribe of people but each stereotype can be hand in hand with other tribes. Meaning under Caribbean stereotypes it says they talk loud, this can also relate to Italian Americans. Some of these stereotypes may also be depending on the individual and how they feel, and some cultures broadcast their stereotypes. When I went to Mexico everything that was advertised was tequila so it is not really a negative stereotype.

  7. I read these stereotypes and I have heard these stereotypes being used for many groups of people. I don't have anything to add because these are mostly the stereotypes I hear.

  9. These are all stereotypes that I have heard before. Many of the stereotypes listed are used in more than one ethnic group such as "talking loudly, having many children, heavy accents and alcoholics."

  10. Some of the stereotypes listed here I am familiar with and others I have not heard of before. These stereotypes are written by members of the tribe they belong to, which is different than mine. This is the reason I have not heard of some of the things listed here. Also, many of these things can describe more than one tribe. For example, its says here that Mexicans are drunks. This is also something that describes the Irish people. This list also says that Irish people are known to have many children. This is something that is sometimes used towards Jewish families.

  11. The list are these stereotypes are very familiar and sounds pretty according to what people think and say about these type of people. It is fascinating how people really base people off of these stereotypes and as a whole.
