Let me explain the Amazon-Hachette cartoon

1) Nobody is born Amazon or Hachette. Some people (many millions) are born It Am or woman.

2) If you are born It Am, you are sick and tired or being REPRESENTED as mafia.

3) Or, if you are It Am, you are sick and tired of representations of ORGANIZED VIOLENCE as being peculiarly IT AM.

4) If you are a woman, you are sick and tired or being represented as a receptionist (aren't there any male receptionists?)

5) If you are a woman, you are sick and tired of being represented as an anonymous, non-descript, low power entity with no agency. Pay attention to the utterance: she passes the message along with no input of her own.

  1. I am both Italian American and a women and the discrimination is ridiculous. Every time I meet someone, one of the first questions they ask me is my family criminals. I remember one time I dated this boy and he refused to come over my house, I did not understand. Eventually I asked him why he wouldn't come over and he said because my dad would have to initiate him like the mafia. I was so taken back and hurt, that I had to stop speaking to that boy. Along the lines of women all I hear is all women should work behind a desk, all women should be house wife and the biggest one that annoys me is that all women can not drive.

  2. It is extremely aggravating to hear that women are only allowed to show their full potential to a certain extent of what close minded people believe. Women are supposed to be these powerful figures that everyone looks up to and admire but the respect isn't shown that way. It is upsetting to see women being told to do something and to stop there; where is the growth supposed to come in? It is so unfair and everyone does not see it as that. You cannot expect someone to be great and not motivate them to do better, to be greater.

    1. Women are seen as housewives but through the years we have made a difference and proved many individuals wrong. It is disgusting to hear some comments and disrespectful song lyrics about women. This is one main reason a women president would make a big difference but people would not respect her.

    2. As a male I would say it is depressing. The yearly name calling for females, the songs, and the limitations to life. Putting myself in a female's shoe I would be pissed off and heavily motivated to do better in life.

  3. As a women I would say that these biases try to discourage us. One should not be expected to do certain kind of jobs and not work to their best potential. Being Italian American or a women does not mean that all belonging to these groups behave the same way. I believe that people's thinking is changing but we still see some biases.

  4. Being an Italian American woman, I have heard many stereotypes from both sides. Being Italian American, I have been asked many times from non Italians if my family was part of the mafia. At times it gets frustrating but I have learned to just ignore their ignorance. Being a woman, I have been told multiple times that its my duty to learn how to cook, be a house wife, stay home and take care of my children. A lot of times I got very upset from people who would discourage me from wanting to be in the health field. They would tell me to go to school to be a teacher like everyone else. I would hear so many times, "teaching is the best job for women; you get out early so you could cook and clean. " It is unfair that people try to discriminate and discourage you because of your gender/nationality/race.

  5. Before reading this blog post, I actually did not take into account even for a second that the cartoon also represented women negatively. I think I overlooked that fact because I actually have been desensitized to the idea that women are often portrayed as that role. I also was just focusing on the Italian American depiction I think, because this being a class that focuses on that, I overlooked the woman in the cartoon. Kind of ashamed to admit but also think it was rather weird that I did not find it offensive.

  6. I had not studied the cartoon enough to notice the receptionist. I think that a lot of people, like myself, were too concentrated on the men and did not pay much attention to the receptionist. Now that I see the picture as a whole I can see how the receptionist is passing a message along as to represent that she is just a communication method. I also feel annoyed that the receptionist is a woman as well. I'm sure men receptionist are just as good at delivering messages. Many people see females as the weaker gender thus making us always look like the bystanders.

I am not Italian but many of my friends are and I have heard people ask if their fathers are in the mafia. I personally would not understand but I have seen it many times and if I was Italian American I would be upset and annoyed with comments like that.

  7. People cannot help what race, gender, and/or ethnicity he/she is born into. But society doesn't help us with the stigmas these three categories are faced with, such as a woman being a receptionist. To that I have to say who cares? I'm a man who has been a secretary for others in the workforce, does that make me less of a man? It doesn't make a woman less of what she is based on her profession, and that is what we have to help each other with realizing. Together we must attempt to erase all these facets associated with bordering gender and race so that my daughters won't have to grow up worrying about how they will be represented because they are studying law. Or any other person who is pursuing his/her careers in making an honest living.

    1. That is the goal, to help each other realize we are all equal and fight societys view that certain professions must be associaeted with race or gender.

  8. The images in this cartoon are offensive, this we know. But I was pretty intrigued when you brought up the women. To be honest I had not noticed that aspect of the cartoon, that is how deeply rooted some of the problems are. I recognize that it is a problem that myself and many other people may have. There is no reason a male could not do a receptionist job just as well as women. This is an example of how stereotypes in a society begin to become normal; if you see and hear things enough you stop questioning them.

  9. We live in a world that there is a lot of double standards. They are a lot of things men can do and women can not do because we would be called out of our name or character. As a woman, we are always portrayed as a receptionist or something that would be qualified as a "woman's job" where in reality women are were capable of doing just as a man and more. I think women are one of the strongest creatures on the earth to be honest.

  10. Day by day as a woman (especially as a woman of color) I find that I have to search for respect. Respect is not immediately given to me when I get involved with certain groups. Women are just as capable as anyone else. The fact that there were laws against blacks and separate laws against women, imagine being both. When you think you are free and then you realize there is still one thing hindering you from achieving your goal. Life as a black woman is like that, birthing a nation but not being able to reap the benefits of the nation.

  11. Just like the rest of the commenters I was clueless on the woman aspect. Didn't not come to mind at all until you explained it. Woman have a hard time being treated equal just as bad as different races. Woman are capable of doing anything just like men. They shouldn't be limited to nothing. Just like sports why can't females play in all the sports that men do today still? The double standards are ridiculous.
