SELECTED QOTES FROM YOUR WORK Comments required

Khadjiah Johnson about taking notes:

"Bullet points make me think I am switching ideas, whereas putting certain ideas in a paragraph form makes me think about the flow of the story. It gives me a chance to think about a recap rather than think about ideas separately. I believe that everything in books subconsciously domino effects each other therefore, I push my note taking to relate to the writing style."

Devin:
"the American Dream: to find great personal success and a sense of purpose in America."

(I focused on 'sense of purpose' rather than the overused and worn out  "success.")

Francesca:
"Throughout reading this book I just felt a sense of lonesomeness and isolation. "

Not LONELINESS or SOLITUDE. Excellent word choice, and acute perception both of the character and the self.

Austin:
"After being essentially robbed for his labor and stranded in West Virginia, rather than cry and lament, Pascal took a different approach. As he said, “But first, while most of the men were cursing eloquently, a few of us had to sit down and laugh at one another.” This moment signifies two things in my mind. Firstly, Pascal has been completely broken. Secondly, Pascal has learned that there are elements to life that are simply out of his control. This loss of control charges him to reconfigure his values."

Unpredictable and original choice, and with a strong argument and insight.

ANONYMOUS (some personal details that the author may not want to make public):
"As much as I admired Pascal’s perseverance and determination, I realized that I am very jealous of his character. With each decision he made whether it was deciding to go to America, stay in America, or chase his dream, he was able to see past all the bad. This is something I struggle with. Pascal met every hardship with an eager eye to succeed. He was left with nothing but a stale piece of bread and still he saw a glimmer of hope that his dream was going to be achieved. When I am faced with a struggle, minuscule compared to those Pascal faced, I let it bring me down and allow it to take me off the track of achieving my goal."

A smooth mixture of representation and self-representation.

  1. These word choices are very good and explanatory for the book we did read. Each student is different and one can not be compared to another, everyone has their own writing choices and styles. These are very good examples but no student should have to follow up with these writing styles, they should be able to write their own way. The examples here are very educated responses and explain the book in a sentence or two.

  2. The comments touched on the essence of the book's overall theme. American Dream yes, but the book flows into some dark aspects of Pascal's journey. The Coal Dump was one of the most gruesome scenes you can witness as a person, let alone an immigrant coming to America.

  3. These quotes were all great examples of representation and self-representation. My favorite was the one posted by the anonymous writer. While reading the Son of Italy book, I was jealous of the type of person Pascal was too. He is admirable because even in difficult times he still found hope to continue and not give up. He is a very courageous man and I don't think I would have been able to make some of the decisions he made. He helped me to learn that nothing in life is impossible if you keep trying and believing.

    1. I was also kind of jealous. Giving up everything for a goal is hard and day by day I find myself with the same struggle. It takes courage to understand the struggles in front of you and to still be willing to go against it despite everything you know.

  5. These notes are examples of great not taking and throughly outline the events in the story. They point out key ideas that help pull together all of the context. I particulary liked Francesca choice of words, "lonesomeness and isolation".

  8. These comments demonstrate excellent writing skills. Each comment flows and they do not sound choppy. They each describe something going on in the book and the writer puts his/her own opinion into them. Khadijah’s comment about note taking is an interesting way to look at writing in bullet points, a way I never looked at it before.

    1. I think adding your personal opinion into your notes is a good thing but sometimes I find it difficult. Wanting to only add the facts and info about the book I forget to put my own take into things until the end of the book. For me also a way i never looked at note taking before.

  9. All of these quotes have great ideas and thoughts. A lot of great words used too. I liked Khadjiah's comment because I can relate to her method of note taking. I could never quite explain why I took notes with bullet points but Khadjiah's comment explained it all. I also liked when she wrote," I believe that everything in books subconsciously domino effects each other therefore, I push my note taking to relate to the writing style." The words she used to describe the flow of the story is very unique and interesting.

  10. I loved Francesa's comment about feeling lonesome. This feeling of isolation affects our thoughts and ideas while reading texts. Therefore sometimes when we take notes our style may reflect how we might be feeling. Bullet points might fit certain texts or pieces because the subject matter might be fast paced and it would be easier to take note of all the different ideas that way. Whereas moments where ideas connect, and moves at a slower pace it might be easier to do paragraph notes. I feel like the idea of brokenness that was explained by Austin makes sense. It was a metaphor throughout the book, this search to redeem one's self from brokenness.

  11. These are some solid excerpts. From just these few lines or bits I see a glimpse of the greater material. It's al very insightful and shows the opinions we've each uniquely formed. Kadjiah's comments on Note taking resonated with my ongoing note taking struggle. The visual comparison of dominoes to note taking and structure clicked something in my head, I hope. I also especially enjoyed the Anonymous comment on Jealousy felt towards Pascal's ability to preserver and "see past the bad". I have felt the same way and am still in awe at the laborious life he lived and the personality conveyed through the book. His character is very unique and inspiring.

  12. I enjoyed reading these excerpts because it is great to see and understand how other people are absorbing and analyzing the material. These are all examples of wonderful writing, and assuming they are all from notes and not prompts, I like how they incorporated their own thoughts and ideas about what they were reading into what they were summarizing.

  13. Enjoyable read for all. It definitely made me want to reconstruct my own notes. Austin's note I liked because while they were writing their notes they followed up with a thought about it.
