You read the first page.

Your raw reactions.

  1. My initial reaction to the first page was a little overwhelming. The descriptions of the setting are very in depth, which paints a picture in my head, but I had to read it twice to make sure I was retaining the information the author was trying to give me. Another thing was in just a short 3 paragraphs we met many characters. I think, from just the first page, this book is going to take concentration to fully comprehend and follow the story line.

  2. I agree with Jack's comment on the first page being a little overwhelming. It was a lot of information to take in that I know we would need throughout the book. It was a bit confusing as well.

  3. While reading the first page I noticed a bunch of information being thrown at you. It was a lot of information to be contained in a small page. Many characters were introduced and the setting was also introduced in depth.

  4. The first page of this book definitely made me realize that it is going to be a lot to handle. This book is going to require severe concentration and the pages are going to have to be read multiple times. I had to look up at least four words to understand their meaning. We have already met four characters from the first page alone and we already get a sense as to what their life is like in America. This book is definitely going to be a challenge.

  5. Because your video lecture warned us about the difficulty of "Christ in Concrete," I braced myself for a work I was going to have to take in quite slowly and deliberately. On just the first page, the reader is introduced to multiple characters and lot of information is given in a such a short span. I can imagine that this work will be a challenge.

  6. First page of Christ in concrete was overwhelming. I saw similar patterns to the other books we read. The word foreman was used again so we know this book would also portray someone’s life filled with labor and underpaid jobs. Characters were introduced and overall they did not seem content.

  7. After reading the first page, I felt it was indeed a really hard text. It is such a dense reading and I feel it would be really hard to digest without the deep reading method. I would need no distractions at all when I read this book. Already, from the first page I felt as though I needed to read it more than twice to keep tabs on the characters and to really take in the settings of the scene.

  8. There were a lot of characters introduced at once. It really is a hard text judging by all the vocab and the way the characters are speaking. The scenery was introduced as well but not in a direct way but from what the characters were doing and what their nicknames were.

  9. Reading the first page of the book makes me extremely worried and overwhelmed by the complexity of the writing. Right away the author doesn't waste anytime introducing a variety of different characters. I had to read the page twice in order to understand it more clearly

  10. Surprisingly, I am not overwhelmed. My ideas might change later but this is not the first time I came across a hard text. I guess being an English major helped me out. The introduction to different character could get confusing if you do not try and separate them in your mind. While I was reading it I was trying to separate each entity, if you do not keep an open mind while reading this book, one could get easily lost, but this seems like it will be interesting.

  11. The first page wasn't bad in the sense that I did not find it difficult to read. I was expecting a frustrating experience and trying to get through it, but I was mildly entertained with the colorful descriptive language used to introduce characters such as Old Nick, who is quite disgusting. The oyster reference painted a very disturbing picture in my mind, otherwise, the rest seemed fine. Just a bunch of guys hazing each other on the construction site.
I honestly prepared for the worst.

  12. This is the type of book that you need 100% focus on and to constantly reread. That being said, the first page was a bit overwhelming. We were introduced to many characters within only three paragraphs. I feel as though most of the words used were descriptive words.

  13. When I read, I try to picture what is going on in my head as if it were a movie. When I read the first page of this book, I was overwhelmed with shades of gray. I don't even really know where they are, but I see a ton of snow and gray. The characters are so natural and present. If the author's intent is to make them believable and real, he did so right on the first page.

  14. Reading that first page actually hurt my head. I wish I could show my emotion through this to show. I felt like the book didn't have a beginning it just started from the middle. I definitely will have to read this book in a different pace.
